We are in The Arctic Circle and I am incredibly excited about that fact. That and the Aurora Borealis last night has me massively excited, The Princess is too, and Britney I think – I mean on a different level to the kids. They’re excited because it’s a holiday and they’re somewhere new but the idea that this is somehow an extra special place isn’t there, I think the trip to see Father Christmas might make that happen though. For the adults though, this whole place is imbued with a lifetime of being told every year that this is magical and that is all kinds of huge.
Luckily, after yesterday we didn’t need to get up early and given the light levels (sun comes up about eleven and sets around two) we were not! Not even the Tiny Yokai!
We did manage to get ourselves on the bus and all credit to Tui everything was beautifully organised and well put together for the ages of the kids. Climate change was much in evidence though, I dropped my gloves and to be honest just dealt with the cold, which I’m sure is wrong for this far north.
In any case we divvied up with the kids and activities; none of us enjoyed being motored around the frozen lake, Britney and the Bonsai Kaiju enjoyed the skidoos best (I felt like they were constantly about to roll which was especially terrifying with the Smol Dragon on the back), The Princess and Tiny Yokai were more into the Huskies at first but then got tempted by the fire and toasting marshmallows, me and the Smol Dragon though really loved the huskies and the Dog Sled. I ever scored my own personal ride as there was a lull in the queue.
After that there was Christmas cookie and tree decoration, a chance to feed reindeer and a hill to sledge down.
I could not get a good picture of the reindeer but feeding them was great fun.
Then back to the cabin for a sauna… which was great and then partly because The Princess dared me and partly because I guess I wanted to say I’d done it in the Arctic Circle, I went and rolled in the snow.
Honestly, I blame Blue Peter.
